Liam.... your view is highly valid. However....

For me.... the clue to the problem is in your statement that:-

For me, that encompasses the problem with ALL TAGS......

The rest of us KNOW that we are in SERIOUS trouble if we spin or slide off. At the very CENTRE of our 'being' is the knowledge that we M*U*S*T N*O*T S*P*I*N.... or we are DOOMED!!!! Actually, we're not as we can ALL restart ourselves. We just don't allow ourselves to THINK that we can survive a spin!

That taught many of us some pretty SPECTACULAR tricks for AVOIDING 'offs' and that develops the ability to salvage a situation that only LOOKS lost!

What you discover in later years, and at higher levels, is that you are almost NEVER going to be quicker than the GOOD guys and that, at best, you can be EQUAL to the good-guys. In those circumstances, you discover that if you lose a YARD on them through just ONE error.... you REMAIN a yard behind then for the rest of the race..... and they WIN! If you have the view that 'I can TAG if I spin' then you will continue to allow yourself to do so..... and you'll lose MUCH more than 1 yard..... and never SEE the leaders again.... until they LAP you....

Trust me.... get in to the attitude that almost ANYTHING can be 'salvaged'.... FORCE yourself into the view that an 'off' or a re-start is a TOTAL WASTE OF THE RACE and not something that is TOLERABLE......

Still, I am old and fat... what do I know....?
