Use a compression gauge !

..they are cheap enough but a good (Snap On?)is preferred.
Screw it in the plug hole, hols the throttle open, ignition off, and crank the motor over on the starter.
A good reading should be 160 -180 psi.
less than 140 psi....think about a top end overhaul.
good compression is essential for best performance.
