Remove spark plug and crank engine, you should be able to feel the compression as you press something down toward the open plug hole.

Pre Health & Safety rules and regs people would just test for compression with their thumb lightly over the plug hole but nobody will suggest that any more through fear of you forcing fuel through your skin into your bloodstream.

Don't expect to feel a very high compression through a cold two stroke motor though, just enough to convince yourself that the engine is pumping air. You'll know if there's nothing as I had a ring fail on a previous engine and it made no pumping sound at all.
