cobleya: No need to get obsessed with reaching 13,500 - 14,000 rpm [unless optimising the kart for racing]. Max power is reached at 12,000rpm so if it's pulling c.12,500rpm by the end of the longest straight [with suitable jetting and gearing] then all's well. Additionally, not using the last 1,000rpm available [13-14k] you are prolonging the life of the engine significantly.

Try to optimise the main jet first [to give max rpm available] then the gearing, or else you find you are gearing up to an engine that is down on power in the first instance - hope that makes sense!
