Just for a couple of test sessions at low cost, someone like Kevan or Mike will be fine. Stay away from testing Zetec cars as they have no relevance. Kent cars will be great to test in and, if you're looking to race as dad 'n' lad, definitely the way to go.

If you think he's going to be a racing driver you have to go where the competition is and that is British Formula Ford. If this is your aim, you'd do better spending a little more and run in a current car with a race engineer as that will give you more of an idea of what it's all about.

Regarding costs, there's little difference between the top levels of karting and the first rung on the ladder in car racing. People get suckered into spending large amounts of money car racing and you just don't have to, especially if you are willing to run the car yourself (no harder than karting), and perhaps hire an engineer for race days and testing if you need to.

Budget for one engine rebuild per season, a set of tyres every race (or less depending on the level of competition) and more expensive but less frequent accident damage. Entry fees are around Ł200, but this isn't far off Super 1 etc. The Kent cars are obviously more expensive to buy than a kart, but hold their value well.

Karting and car racing are two very different sports so any comparisons between the two are largely irrelevant.
