Hi Adrian, I have also noticed the same. We are lucky that Joseph probably has another year in Cadets so by the time we move up the uncertainty in JTKM around new tyres, CIK chassis’s and different restrictors should be clearer.
In my mind at the moment JTKM is cheaper to enter and in the local area well supported but overall on a national level there is not much difference.
The two key question as I see it so far:
Firstly if you want to go JTKM you probably need to be direct drive to race at the sharp end whereas with Minimax they are all TAG so it doesn’t matter, so do you want to push him or stand and watch and prey they battery works?.
Second point, with the CIK chassis regs in JTKM you can't use certain chassis adjustments (Caster/Camber or torsion bars) with the grippy tyres it is still unclear what really works best so do you want the technical challenge of working out your chosen chassis’s dynamics for JTKM to dial in the best compromise settings, in Minimax there is more to get right to find the ultimate settings but at least you have a greater range of variables.
I think generally JTKM is cheaper and simpler and our local tracks the ability level is varied. Many of the experienced cadets who have recently moved up are doing very well so you should get some idea how Danny would get on. Again in Minimax we watched one of our old sparing partners from cadets latest year win the final a Whilton comfortably and several others where well up the grid so I am sure again you would find yourselves at the right end of the grid fairly quickly time and practice would ensure that.
Anyway I am sure we will be asking your views this time next year when we need to make this decision so please ensure you are well versed in the benefits of whichever route you take so we can learn from your findings.
Matthew
