Agree with Alan try the pulse pipe first, however I was running a Junior motor for someone last week that was giving the same problem of not reving much over 11K and sounding flat, gave up trying in the end after changing just about everything.
Took enginge for rebuild this week and nothing appeared too bad other than the wrong squish 1.12mm not 1.2min the crank was running out by 2.5 thou and there was slight scoring above the exhaust port.
Engine was an 07 with 09 barrell so I am hoping for somthing better when I try it again next week.
