Originally, there were TWO pipes attached to the vent tubes and they usually went into a catch tank.

They subsequently allowed a single tube with a hole sliced into the tube at the middle.

Put a one piece tube without the hole in, at your peril.

It will ruin your carb's performance, I've seen it done several times.

Remember that the hole is a source of entry for dirt, straight into your tiny jets, so a piece of open cell foam can be put over the tube to keep dirt out.
