Thanks all for the help and advice.
I took the carb apart, cleaned it and tightened the screws well on top and it started and ran well. I overdid it on the revs while the kart was on the ground and broke the clutch - what a muppet I am! Anyway, the original problem was sorted thanks to the help given here, I just need to learn a bit quicker!
