Probably a top direct drive just has the edge over a FULLY SORTED TAG in the dry. Probably about 0.15 seconds a lap. One very knowledgeable person believes it looses out of hairpins. However in the wet there is no difference. The gap is very narrow.
However, at last weekends Whilton Mill meeting the marshals were removing, under radio instruction, spun out Junior TKM DDs in wet races. No chance of an unassisted restart. A TAG a definite plus there. TKM is the only DD class left in MSA UK karting, and probably the world.
There is no difference in the driving 'feel' to a DD or TAG, or the carb. settings. Just wind in the idle screw as far as it can go, and then some.
Use chain wax rather than chain grease on the TAG if you get one. If not very careful chain grease gets on the clutch and causes slip for 2 or 3 laps. Definitely not an advantage with a TKM.
