Almost everything you can do to warm the tyres on the rolling lap doesn't really work. The quick guys are quick in the first few laps for the same reason they're often much quicker in the wet.

Practice going quickly on cold tyres throughout a test day or ten and you'll soon get the hang of it. The first lap on a set of tyres not used that day is usually the worst for grip and the best tyres to practice on. The harder you drive in those early laps, the quicker your tyres come on.

Novices warming tyres on rolling laps usually results in red faces.
