You need to run a little further and faster before you drop it, and jump in (from the engine side) as soon as the engine is turning over after dropping it (once you have dropped it and the engine is turning over you're unlikely to be able to accelerate it). Some old timers on this forum go on about how easy it is to self start if you get the technique right, but the fact is that it is a lot more difficult these days than it used to be due to the greater size and weight of current karts so don't feel to bad about not being able to do it every time.
