Helmet painting - what paint to use?

Hi - has anyone here painted their own helmet? if so what paint did you use? I know using a compressor and all the gear is going to get the best result but I am interested in trialling a decent spray can or getting some quality paint mixed and put in a can just to see how I get on first - I have a couple of helmets to try on.
