Hi Cos, I'm also new(ish) to karting I don't know how old your lad is or how long you've been testing, My lad is 6 and we've been having fun for just over 6 months now the only way I've been finding out how the kart's been handling better/worse is via the info on the lap timer. Keep a log! Everyone will tell you this as my boy at six has no idea how the kart is handling however he is slowly getting there.
On Monday down at racing for buttons at PFI it was wet and cold he went out for the first race with average results and a few spins so over the evening I made a few changes which made a huge difference we ended up with the following setup which gave us our best performance yet.
Front wets on 60mm extended hubs, Rear's 5mm off circlip Tyre presure 30psi rear 28psi front, sprocket started out on 87 ended up with a 92 which I think was our best move (knock 3/4 teeth off for a comer as we run a wtp)
Also when your testing does your lad have anyone to chase that's on his level? This can make a MASSIVE difference as you lad will be more motivated and focused most importantly he will push himself.
Finally never be embarrassed to ask other cadet dads at your track for help and advice remember they all stated out like us.
Good luck, Bucky.
