Hi stevesub,

You say the piston was stated as being brand new.

An easy way to tell is to look inside the piston at the underside of the crown (meaning underneath the top).

If the piston is new, the appearance should be bright with no burnt oil deposit. If there is evidence of burnt oil, (appearing light brown to black depending on how long the piston has been run) then It should considered as a used item: not new!
