Historically, this myth about over-revving causing the crank to twist, has its roots back in the days of rotary valve 100cc engines where the carburettor was just above the sprocket. When the chain came off, it would smash into the underside of the carb/inlet manifold, jamming up and causing the crank to twist. The main danger from revving on the stand without load is that it often is done on small throttle openings, which reduces the amount of lubrication entering the engine.
