If its very cold or damp Ali rims will be faster than mags...where it matters, at the start of the race ( you may have have to wait 3-4 laps for mags to "come in") it too late then!....you have to get a fine balance between being fast at the biggining of a race and not going off towards the end.....if its mid winter and a short race, in say TKM, ali rims will the way to go.
