Was it popping and banging due to a misfire rfom running 18 volts?

It's not illegal, it's aginst the Rotax class regs and there is a better trick than using 18 volts and it's within the regs.

I'm sure the rev limiter circuitry will not take kindly to being subjected to 18v long term and the resulting higher voltage is likely to cause penetrative damage within the coil casing if the spark plug starts to fail.

Hardly worth risking a good coil at a cost approaching Ł200.00.
