Possibly too lean, but have you taken the barrel off and checked the big end bearing yet, when they let go it can sometimes give a similar appearance when viewed from above. Had it just been rebuilt? If so maybe insufficient piston/bore clearance was given, or maybe the ignition timing was out, or maybe insufficient squish clearance was given. Did you have to run in a new piston? How much oil, and what type did you use? Is the ring intact, or was it caused by ring breakage? All sorts of possibilities!
