Now that Rotax have pretty much sorted the con rod/ big end assy problems and blessed us with a much more reliable clutch, they are pretty bombproof.

And that comes from someone who used to berate the Max constantly with good reason.

It took quite a while (ten years) to get the engine sorted but now they have a fair bit of equality on the barrels as well, they are mostly even.

Like every race engine, they have to be looked after but our last full rebuild was after 18 months with a couple of top end (piston) changes in between.

You'll find it very difficult to run a Max on the raggety edge of a sieze as it is water cooled and has a Nicosil plated bore.

I've tried and not succeeded.

You do not need a big budget to get the engine on the front of a grid, just take copious notes of what you do at what tracks.

John Savage's software helps a lot if you are unfamiliar with float carbs that are about 6mm too big for the engine.

Our actual spares expenditure for our entire weekend at Whilton consisted of a power valve gasket at Ł1.00, obviously I don't include tyres in the equation but I will say that the tyres we were using on Saturday practise were worn so thin that they could have exploded.

Even with those tyres completely shagged tyres we were breaking the lap on the Saturday.

Good setup and maintenance is much more important than chucking money at a poor driver in a badly maintained kart.

We use GFM (Gary Munroe)for our engine rebuilds as he does the engines himself and his engines will equal and surpass any of the big names around, and he gives the personal touch.

Rotax can be as cheap as you want it to be and you should get up to 8-12 hours for a top end and I think we had 50+ hours on our bottom end last time.

There's a lot of bull ploppy surrounding Max, and it's started by people who wish to relieve you of your hard earned.

Don't be afraid of experimenting with the engine if you get one.

If your average rebuilder had seen our power valve settings at the weekend they would have said 'no way', but it worked a treat.

Plus, you have a very helpful forum to get help from.
