The coil spade terminals have a habit of breaking inside the insulation where the wire enters the crimp.

Examine them very carefully and see if they appear a bit floppy.

Did the engine just keep speeding up uncontrollably when it started?

Have you got a cutout switch on the engine?

Sometimes the wire touches the chassis because the insulation has worn through where the cable ties allow it to run and it shorts the wire to the chassis, imitating the kill switch.
