It's not that simple John (I'm not having a go at you and respect your opinion/advice very much).
As a novice you need a reference point and 'testing' isn't always the answer. A novice wants to concentrate on his performance and not the equipment (so he knows the equipment isn't 2 secs off the pace for starters). A novice may not have the money to test either. His/her performance outways the 'set up' as we know in terms of time. He/she would also not know the difference between set ups so it would only add to there confusion. So an average setup that you knows about right, and bum in seat time has to be the answer? not test test test which seems to be the stock answer (even though your right certainly for someone with some experience).
In answer to the question wide at the front narrow at the rear in the wet. Find someone with the same chassis and ask there advice. Whilst they might have a different weight/driving style it should give you a starting point.
