A proper running Rotax starts first time!!!
What riddick is talking about is called "priming" the carb. You blow down the breather tube (the other one attached to the tank and connected usually to a catch tank). Obviously this assumes you have one, if you don't you definitely need one as every time you change the jet you'll be emptying the carb bowl of its fuel.
Remove the pipe from the catch tank end and blow in it! Hold the pressure for 10-15seconds and then release, watch for the bubbles coming back out of the carb and then repeat once again. Once the (forever present) air bubble is stable you're OK to start it.
The battery also needs to be in full charge, but I suspect that it is as it eventually starts. Remember that the Rotax engine runs off the battery with no other way of recharging other than the off-board mains/genny charger. A bit of a poor design if you ask, but don't go there, too big a can of worms to get the lid open!
If you find the above still doesn't give the instant start, you might be on the wrong jet, or the spark plug a bit oiled. If the engine hasn't been started for a while occasionally does need a bit of choke, but only for the very first run/turns, from there it should idle OK. Of course adjust the finger idle screw until it does so.
Bear in mind that as all 2T engines, but more so than others, the Rotax engine doesn't like to idle and has a tendency to foul the plug if idled for too long. That's why you'll never see a grid of Rotax engines running iddled for ages before setting off!
What we all do is check it starts when we first sit in it on the grid and then only ever start it once the gate opens and we're about to join the track! It's good practice!
