Thinking back to my m/cycle mechanics course I think you will actually find that the reason for adding sintered bronze is to actually retain some of the heat,as you say yourself you had to get some heat into your original ones before they worked properly.

Happy to be corrected if i'm wrong but fairly sure that is the reason.
