You need to buy a carb pressure tester. Dartford Karting do them and buy the small adapter piece aswell. You can test if the carb is holding pressure without dismantling it but it's not recommended to pump it up to more than 0.7 bar otherwise you stretch the diaphram.

It sounds like your carb needs a good clean and probably a new gasket set aswell. Start by dismantling the carb by unscrewing all the bolts. Make a note of the order in which the gaskets fit. If you have a digital camera take pics.

Once fully dismantled you will see the needle and paddle which has a small spring under it. Undo the small screw which holds this in place and remove.

Now you can see the seat that the needle fits into. Next step is to clean every part of the carb using carb cleaning spray that you can buy from most dealers or car shops. Use some WD40 aswell.

Now refit the needle and paddle assembly. Fit the adapter onto the carb pressure tester and hold this onto the hole in the carb body in line with the paddle. Pump up the tester. The pressure should break around 1.0 bar and hold no less than 0.5 bar.

Reassemble using the new gaskets. Job done.!
