You really need to spend some time with someone who will show you what to do.

I will be at 3-Sisters on 27/28/29 March and will be quite happy to spend a bit of time showing you (with one of my motors)how to do the checks and how to set the engine up.

To do port checks and ignition timing you would need a DTI that can measure 30mm and they are either expensive and/or thin on the ground. You are better of with a digital vernier (with a holder - I will send you a photo if I can find your e-mail address) as you can use that for all the checks aswell as it being an invaluable tool in general.
