I was running at Whilton yesterday and my TKM Extreme engine seized on the last run. Here's what happened... At the end of the straight it felt like the throttle hadn't closed, so I yanked the plug cap off which cut the engine ok. When I got back to the pits it had seized.
The top of the piston is dry and speckled white in places.
First question, what could have caused this? I'm running L-2 and H-1/8 on the carb, with 300ml oil to 5l petrol. Over the course of the day I dont think I got through as much fuel as usual which suggests it may have been running lean. However the carb settings should be ok. So, could a carb problem have caused it to run too lean?
Second question, can the engine be saved? The piston is seized right at the bottom of the barrel. Is there any way to remove it? If I put it in the oven, will the barrel expand more or less than the piston?
On the plus side, I did pass my ARKS test and improve my best lap by 4 tenths... down to 50.1 now.
