In reality the engine number only tells you how old the crankcases are - unless you've had the engine from new and you know that nothing (ie. barrel, head, crank) has been replaced.

The age doesn't really make any difference to its performance. Our best engine (albeit now in Extreme form) is BT1825 but I've no idea how old the head, barrel and crank are.
