The reason they have lasted so long is that you change the oil regularly.

If the gears are starting to deteriorate, the oil will drain off with a milky appearance. If the oil looks good, then the gears are almost certainly OK.

However, at 3 years, it really is time to replace them. The new metal gears are expected to be more long lived, and I would recommend using them.

If the gears fail, you simply end up with a horrible mess inside the gear casing. Usually, the engine does not suffer other harm.
