Yes the debris could be a piston ring but if its fine metal particles thats unlikely, peppering looks likeash on the spark plug which is actually melted parts of the piston. Carb starvation is possible but do you not think the engine would have just cut out if it had no fuel going to it? A while plug is DEFINITE signs of a mixture thats too lean.
