TKM BT82 - PVL Ignition - No spark ?

I'm a newbie and getting my son a Kart together.

I've recently bought an engine and i'm now wanting to get it fired up. Whilst I haven't tried starting it yet with fuel I first wanted to check there's a spark.

I've removed the plug and earthed it against the head but when i spin the wheels i can't see a spark. Is this usual or is it that i'm not spinning the wheels fast enough ?

P.S it's a direct drive.
