The range looks on the high side but if it has worked for your lads then that is what matters. If running a good set of wets on a drying track then very low pressures will minimise damage if the track dries too much. If it just a practice session then maybe better to call them in.
When are the tyres past their best? This will depend on the track - if there is a lot of grip then an old set of wets may well be better than a newer set whilst for another track it may be `the newer the better'.
Last weekend our driver was unhappy with the front end and a change of slicks made a significant difference in speed. Both sets were used and the `discarded' set did not look obviously past their best. A lot does come down to driver feedback.
I have heard that how you store tyres can make a difference especially in colder weather. Many people keep the tyres at least indoors and some even keep then in a warm airing cupboard.
