The dumy is the same width at the little-end (of the conrod). You fit this mini gudgeon in the conrod with the needle/roller bearings surrounding it and they all stay in place.

You then lower the piston over the conrod and start pushing the REAL gudgeon pin through. It now ejects the dummy through the other side but the needle/roller bearings remain in place as the dummy and the 'real' swap place.

Without the dummy or the grease, the needle/roller bearing all fall out while you are fitting the real pin.
