Lasers are BRILLIANT..... if you have money to waste!

The CORRECT (note the word!) method (without posing in the pits!) is to:-

1) Remove the chain
2) Place the THINEST edge/piece of a steel rule, hacksaw blade blunt edge, straight steel bar or whatever against the FLAT side of the DRIVEN sprocket.
3) Now rotate the axle while keeping the straight-edge in contact with the sprocket until it makes contact with the DRIVE sprocket. It SHOULD touch the side of the DRIVE sprocket at the same moment as being FLUSH with the DRIVEN sprocket.
4) If it ISN'T, slide the DRIVE sprocket carrier over until it IS!

Job Done for the price of a cheap steel rule! Spend the remains of the £30 on something that makes you go FASTER!

For completeness: the drive and driven sprocket teeth are not ALWAYS rhe same width so it pays to confirm with the OTHER side of the sprockets as well as a 'belt and braces' excercise.

In reality, if you chose the dright length 'ruler', you don't need to remove the chain as it will fit within the mounted chain. A good straight edge is a long piece of Key Steel (length of square-cut steel which you fit to the axle to stop the sprocket carrier, hubs and disk carier from rotating, freely, on the axle). Buy a 'rod' of the stuff long enough to fit and keep it in the tool box.
