I'm having difficulty figuring out how blocking the gearcase breather could possibly stop your engine starting.

Are you sure you didn't block the pulse pipe outlet by accident?

That WOULD stop it working.

You should never combine the rad overflow and the gearcase breather in the same bottle, but if you do, make sure the gearcase breather goes to the pipe on the bottle so that if the read does bleed into the bottle, the gearcase pipe won't draw back the coolant as it cools down.
