You ask

"Hi - What would happen if I sealed up the opening of the black plastic gearbox filler cap?

Running it to an expansion bottle seems pointless-there's only 50ml of oil in the thing to start with, and no reason for that to blow out that I can imagine."

It would pressurise the gearbox and may damage the seals. The other problem is that if the water pump seal failed then how would you know? The gearbox would fill up with water/antifreeze and again damage your seals and the gears as they would have no lubrication - NOT A GOOD IDEA!
