If you start with the gear that fits on the balance axle, it will only fit one way. If it is fitted the other way then the lockring which holds the gear in place will not fit in the groove because the gear is covering the groove.
Then mount the other gear [onto the crankshaft] in the opposing direction.
Be sure to align the marks in both axles with their corresponding marks on the crankcase, otherwise the engine will vibrate, and you'll get disqualified when the engine is checked by track technicians.
