A mate of mine nearly got scammed selling his phone on ebay. Goes like this...

He put a brand new phone on ebay after getting an upgrade. Not sure what the make was but it was fancy with a touch screen. Worth about Ł350 retail, was bid up to Ł270 then at the last minute a new bidder comes in at Ł320 and wins it. They then sent my mate an email to him that looked exactly like a receipt message from paypal. This was followed up with a couple of texts saying i've paid wheres my phone.

My mate sent off his phone, then realised that the email from paypal was a fake.

He phone the police, they where not at all interested. He phoned royal mail, and got transfered round the houses for a couple of hours. Eventually they said to him they cannot do anything to intercept the post with out the instruction of the office of the home secretary! i kid you not.

Eventually the right person in the police got hold of it, he got a call back.

After a month the phone was returned, the police orginally told him that it was evidence and could not be returned.

And the best bit was the scammer was a 14 year old lad living on a farm in essex, well thats who got nicked for it. But he only got caught because he was doing his scam on a massive scale the police had over 100 calls about unpayed phones bought from ebay.
