No, you don't have to protect the sprocket, that's your choice.

The disc protector is meant to prevent damage or breakage to the brake disc, which could result in total brake failure.

If a chain breaks on contact with a curb, the risk to the driver and other competitors must be less than a shattered brake disc: and so the new regulation.

But we never go without a sprocket protector and have found it pays-off.
