batteries are wierd in the fact that the less their used the quicker they die. to prolong the life of a lead acid battery keep it charged, use it lots and keep it in a warm place. don't continually start your kart on the stand or dummy grid. start it once on the dummy grid to check its fine and then turn it off, don't keep switching it on and off. so if you go karting lots your battery shoudl last you ages but if you only go karting once every two months its not going to last very long. keeping a battery discharged doesn't do it any good and a battery isn't a great thing to keep a spare of as they do have a shelf life and you can have a brand new un used battery and it won't work when you go to use it because its self discharged so just buy one off the traders when yours breaks.
as for mounting the battery on the seat i don't know if it makes any difference, it probably is better but i never had problems and mine was mounted on the chassis rail. one of my batteries which i used all the time lasted well over two years with no performance drop.
