There no reason why you could not use a car compression tester on a kart. Its a few years back now but it think the one i had went up to 200psi. My mini engine used to give just over 100psi.

You should test on full throttle and you'll need to turn the engine over with a starter.

The other thing that is worth checking is the 'squish' you can use a piece of solder through the spark plug hole and measuring the thickness it is squashed to. You can then work out a compression ratio.
