It doesn't have to be that expensive. Going for a second hand motor would be cheaper if you decide to go down the clutch route. I personally found a clutch favourable for my karting and it's all about personal choice. You can still learn to control slides with a clutch. As stated on this thread you don't need one but if you want a clutch don't be put off and go for it.
