for a pretty good summation of the arguments.

It used to be that when running an aircooled close to the edge, the extra film strength of castor was a safety factor.

But a modern TKM isn't that highly stressed any more, and you may not take the engine apart quite as often as you might, so you can use a semi-synthetic to advantage.

On the other hand you still have a cast iron barrel and a castor based oil is still best for running in cast barrels. (Castrol suggest that their semi-synthetic can be used for running in, just up the ratio a bit)
