Yes, there are pros and cons to nationwide tyre consistency for a ‘class’.
However, this is more about where income from the award of tyre contracts goes. In at least some cases such commissions are / were presumably considerable.
Sure, when a commercial enterprise like Rotax stipulates a tyre, I presume the profit on those tyres – probably substantial (perhaps even more than on engines and parts?) – is retained entirely within that enterprise. It is consequently up to private individuals whether they wish to ‘buy into’ that.
But the ABkC used to (past tense, as we now learn after all the unnecessary speculation) collect commissions on other tyre contracts and allocate such funds in ways some found problematic and certainly undemocratic, given that the money came / comes from almost all of us.
Even though that is apparently no longer the case, it is still far from transparent what actually happens now.
This opaqueness (to quote Chris) is a very strong argument for IKR to avoid MSA ‘class’ tyres altogether – on principle.
