A few years ago 10 mins before a mixed,Bambino /cadet,/jnr /snr all out in first run together (usual format !! ) practice day was due to take place a driver had an diabetic fit alongside our van,, he swallowed his tongue which I sorted (as we have friend who has experienced this with their son)!!!. An ambulance and Paramedic arrived within 5 mins. This driver was an MSA licened driver of 16 in TKM who had been "out with his mates the evening before" !!,and to make it worse his father did not have his insulin (that was 12 miles away in his mothers bag and she was coming later) !!!!! with him he kept going on about someone giving him some Lucozade or sugary drink and chocolate which according to the Ambulance control and later the paramedics was a NO GO he could have "choked to death just clear the airways and put in Recovery position "and always call the professionals..

He spent over an hour with paramedics in the Ambulance and then was transferred to Hospital . Speaking to the father of a Jnr who only practiced due to the same issues,he told me his son had had one of these fits when starting karting at 8,he was told by the MSA he would have to go 8-10 yrs without another one before they would issue him a licence,at 16 he was. Three local MSA officials were immediately told about this at the MSA meeting the next day,when SURPRISE !!! 5 days later he practiced and raced at an MSA meeting at another track,when asked the same informed officials said they were powerless as his PARENT/Gaurdian had not declared his condition or the incident a week earlier,this 2nd track is one hour from a hospital by road.The Licensing Medical Officer at H.Q. on hearing of this 3 weeks later !!!, declared this was not allowed. This same lad then 17 got a job maintaining and testing afterwards Customer Racing Cars and again his medical condition had not been declared. The Parents,Organisors of the Kart meetings and latterly his Employers could possibly have been taken to the cleaners if this guy had had another fit and caused a major possibly fatal crash while racing /working..Be aware dont be afraid to TELL the Organiser /owner of the track if you KNOW someone has a serious medical condition that COULD compromise THE SAFETY of yourself and others.
