My son barrel rolled his cadet kart at Rissington a couple of years a go. It was clear he took the full weight and impact of the first roll on his head and neck, he was released from the kart on the subsequent roll. Red flag. He sustained abrasion damage to his suit and was clearly in shock, but no damage to neck etc. Considering the weight of a heavily ballasted kart and the speed he was going I think he was very lucky. He always wears a Leatt neck brace, we ditched the foam ring very quickly as we could see it offered little impact protection. As an aside it also stops him from looking behind, a habit that a lot of cadets find hard to get out of. As discussed each to their own, personally having seen my son involved in a very serious accident I have no doubt the device saved him from more serious injury. I personally won't let him race without it.
