I've been done for that too.

Unfortunately the police asked if I realised that I should not travel in that lane, and truthfully I answered that I had not, because I had not thought of a garden trailer as being an articulated vehicle.

So I got an even bigger fine for driving without thinking!

Later a friend in the police explained that I had got caught by the quota weekend, when the police need to make their quota of arrests in the various categories or be interviewed for slacking on the job. The question was one of the police win-win questions. If you answer that yes you did know, then there is no mitigation and if you answer that you did not know they have you for failing to know.

(apparently a hire firm is meant to tell you that you are an artic when you hire the trailer)
