Blimey, in no other sport would you expect an 8-year-old to do physical exercise for 45 minutes in one day, having got them out of bed at silly o'clock and not getting them home until late. Sounds more like child abuse than fun to me!
I went on a children in sport class once, and it was drummed into us that we should not judge youngsters by our adult standards. Maybe that's why there are so many crashes in later heats and races - the drivers are just too tired. We are expecting them to do too much.
10 minutes racing is far too much for little kids. Oh yeah, ask them and they'll say they're fine, of course they will. But I know when Alex used to say "I'm not tired really" he'd be asleep before we hit the A303 from Clay!
Short, sharp heats (and plenty of them) will teach race craft more than going round and round and round.
