Or the front grid had some drivers who were slower than the leaders of the second grid. You cannot rely on the whole of one grid being uncatchably faster than the second grid, apart from experience there's the problem of mechanical problems that may slow someone down without forcing them off the track.

It's always a problem when the leaders of a second grid are overtaking the back markers of the grid ahead. The speed differential may be close to the same as if the back markers were being lapped.
