The thread is intended to be a discussion of the rules as we understand them regarding the use of Kerbs as refers to Karting, and perhaps to identify what we think they were meant to mean and why.

The first rule seems to be that racing takes place on the track

The second rule seems to be that you can only leave the track twice, on the second occasion there should be an enquiry by the CoC, which can result in disqualification

The third rule is that driving consistently with a wheel off the track or leaves the track may be considered unsafe by the CoC and result in exclusion.

The fourth rule is that the CoC should take into account whether a track violation was done for advantage, with a presumption to redress the advantage.

There are then a number of definitions

1) The track is defined as being between the white lines. The kerb is not part of the track unless it is included inside the white line.

2) Leaving the track is defined as putting the whole of a wheel over the white line or, where there is a kerb over the edge of the kerb.

There doesn't seem to be a definition of 'a kerb'. Generally it seems to mean a construction recognisably different from the surface of the track and marked as such.

My interpretation of the Blue Book is that

1) Racing is meant to take place between the white lines

2) Racing is not intended to be carried out on the kerbs, but it is not practical to count every use of the kerb as a departure from the track, so use of the kerb is permitted for non-deliberate purposes.

3) To support my theory on 'occasional' use, the wording states that regularly putting a wheel off the track, ie; over the white line, even if that is on a kerb; may be deemed unsafe (or if not unsafe, an abuse of the track for advantage).

I agree it is a bit of a 'legalistic' sort of approach but I think this is called for, simply because there is no definition of 'the kerb'.

For example, if the track has an uncoloured concrete edge to stop the tarmac fraying is that a 'kerb' or an edging strip. If it is a kerb, does it mean that the white line painted 18 inches away is meaningless because one can drive till one falls off the edge of the kerb or is a kerb only a kerb if it is designated as such on the track licence diagram and painted as such to let you know?

And if one is expected to use the kerbs as a regular part of the track, what is the point of saying that racing takes part inside the white lines.

The only way I can get the four rules to make sense is if the uses of kerbs is permitted but deprecated and that deliberate use of the kerbs is an abuse for advantage, (much as say overtaking under the yellow is an abuse, but often understood to be a mistake if the place is given back, negating the advantage).

I think there is also a problem with the size of kerbs, again to do with the lack of definition. I don't believe that a kerb should be wider than a kart itself for instance. It is a joke that a kart could have all four wheels outside the white line on the track and still be deemed to have not left the track because it is on a kerb, while a bit further on a similarly wide bit of concrete might be deemed to have left the track because 'that bit of concrete' isn't a kerb.

In part this is because there is no agreement as to what a kerb does. Is it a large safety area where one can drive, is it simply a 'hard verge' that has been repaired, is it meant to slow you down or is it merely a bit at the edge of the track that is hard and different from the track surface? And is any different surface 'kerb' or is it only the coloured bits that are kerb?

Also, given the growth in hard safety runoff areas, what are the rules about rejoining the track? in theory, as I understand it, you would have to exercise caution rejoining the track from a non-kerb safety area because you have 'left the track' but could rejoin from a large kerb without any consideration at all, because you haven't left the track at all and are therefore entitled to your karts-width of track. (Yes, I know that we generally respect each other at that speed, but incidents will occur. " I thought he would have to wait" might not be a satisfactory excuse, especially if the Clerk looks at the track license and discovers that this area is officially kerb, not run off.)
